When it comes to luxury and performance, the Ferrari Portofino M 2024 is the reference in grand tourers. This convertible, powered by a roaring V8 engine, represents a glorious evolution of the Ferrari Portofino, a model that has been a hit with fans since its debut in 2017.
The “M” in its name is for “modificata,” meaning “modified” in English, a fitting description for this upgraded version. While one might ponder if the “M” could signify “Marinello,” the birthplace of Ferrari, or even “magnificent,” Ferrari has already set a precedent by naming a model “La Ferrari.”
Ferrari’s engineers have made five updates to the Portofino M. One of the standout features of the Portofino M is the 2,000-watt air scarf, which gently breathes warm air onto the driver and passenger when the top is down. It enhances comfort, making top-down drives more enjoyable in cooler weather.
The retractable aluminum roof transforms the Portofino M from a coupe to a spider in just 14 seconds, even at speeds up to 30 mph. It is perfect for a grand entrance on any busy high street.
Under the hood, the Portofino M houses Ferrari’s award-winning 3.9L turbocharged V8 engine. It boasts an additional 20 horsepower, bringing the total to 620 horsepower, with torque remaining at 760 Newton meters. The dual-clutch gearbox now includes an eighth gear, making highway cruising more relaxed. The first seven gears are shorter, allowing for punchier acceleration.
An additional driving mode on the Manettino dial further improves the driving experience. The new “Race” mode joins the lineup, giving drivers more control and performance options. Ferrari’s advanced sixth-generation Side Slip Control system offers varying degrees of assistance, from tight control to almost complete freedom.
Despite being considered the “baby” of Ferrari’s convertible lineup, the Portofino M delivers a thrilling drive. It accelerates from 0 to 100km/h in 3.45 seconds, slightly faster than its predecessor. It also reaches 200 km/h, a full second quicker than before, with a top speed shy of 325 km/h. The engine’s sound alone is a symphony to any car lover’s ears.
Handling is where the Portofino M shines. Agile and adept, it instills confidence in the driver, providing a dynamic and enjoyable experience on winding roads. Standard carbon-ceramic brakes give powerful stopping performance and a shorter pedal journey, which adds to the car’s responsiveness. The “Bumpy Road” setting, a favorite feature, adjusts the suspension to smooth out uneven surfaces, enhancing the comfort of the drive.
As a 2+2 GT Spider, the Portofino M checks all the boxes for a grand tourer. It is a comfortable cruiser, one of the world’s fastest convertibles, and a delight around corners. While some may find it less sharp than the Roma, it strikes a balance that only a few supercars can match.
Comparing its rivals, the similarly priced Bentley Continental GTC and the slightly cheaper Aston Martin DB11 Volante offer different dynamics in luxury convertibles. Each has a unique appeal, but the Ferrari Portofino M is ready to deliver a fantastic driving experience for those who desire the prancing horse.
